We are committed to both technical and trade apprenticeships, and recruit annually in both areas. Technical trainees are supported through an initial 4-year day-release College programme, culminating in the achievement of an HNC qualification. This can be extended by further day-release training to achieve a BSc Degree in Construction Management. Craft apprentices are supported through a 3-year course in conjunction with Construction Skills and a local College, also on a day-release basis, culminating in NVQ Level 3 in the relevant trade.
Short-course training is undertaken at various intervals throughout the year, both in-house and externally. An assessment of need is agreed between our Training Director and our NeBOSH-qualified Health and Safety Director, with requirements noted within our Annual Training Plan. Additional training is provided where a site-specific need has been identified.
DREW welcomes the opportunity to provide school work experience placements across all disciplines, to the 15-18 age group. This provides many young people with a greater insight into the construction industry and often leads to a career choice in the relevant area, by either the trade or technical route.
It is DREW Policy to continuously develop our employees in line with our business objectives. We train and retain a highly skilled workforce in all areas of our business activities, with employee training designed to meet the needs of both the overall business plan and the personal career objectives of the employee. Our staff are appropriately trained to enable them to be competent to complete their contribution to the construction process, irrespective of their role in that process. We provide adequate resources to ensure that employees are kept up-to-date with legislative and statutory requirements as they affect the business, changing working practices and all other measures to ensure that the Company maintains the highest standards across all levels of our activities.
We are committed to continuous improvement and increased efficiency for the benefit of our Clients, with the implementation of our training programme designed to assist in achieving this goal.
We have pledged our support to encourage people from all backgrounds to consider one of the many careers in construction and the built environment (C&BE). This new campaign branded 'Go Construct' comes at a crucial time. The sector is set to grow by nearly 3% over the next five years, creating over 220,000 new roles. The Go Construct campaign highlights why construction is 'a career like no other' along with the many career opportunities available in the industry. Over 400 construction Employers, Schools and Colleges, local government organisations and those with a passion for construction have met to share their ideas for the campaign, which includes the launch of a new web portal providing a 'one stop shop' for anyone considering a career in the industry. The web portal provides tools, resources and content for teachers, careers advisors, construction ambassadors and employers like DREW to assist with promoting a positive image of construction.
As part of the campaign we will offer chaperoned tours of our sites to local Primary and Secondary Schools to allow young people to see what it is really like working in the sector. Pupils will have the chance to speak to an experienced Site Manager and learn about all the trades involved.
