This project, the third phase in a major redevelopment programme undertaken for the Hospice, followed demolition of the original building on the site, and construction of a two-storey Wellness Centre and Social Hub of approximately 410m2, situated in the landscaped grounds. The building is of traditional brick and block construction to one area; the remaining areas are oak-clad block construction to blend with the surroundings. A clay and slate roof covers the steel structure, with oak posts supporting a flat roof allowing for provision of a fully glazed screened area. A light, bright south-facing room provides views over the Memorial Garden. The accommodation comprises fundraising offices on the first floor, multi-use rooms, therapy rooms and kitchen.
Severe adverse weather conditions during the winter period flooded the site, affecting areas of the structure. Investigations and further works were necessary to ensure the structure would remain sound, and all storm water effectively drained to eliminate the risk of any future flooding. The project was successfully completed in August 2014.
