This project comprised the design and construction of a new single storey block of 7 classrooms, occupying the south east corner of the College campus site, adjacent the main entrance and reception, with limited access and working area. The surrounding area is predominantly residential with a Primary School located nearby. We utilised a SIPS (Structural Insulated Panel System) method of construction, providing for lightweight construction with a short build time. Panels and beams were delivered pre-cut, therefore minimising site waste. A road closure was necessary during the lifting operation associated with the SIPS panel erection. This was subject to final agreement and issue of necessary licences by the Highways Authority. This and other crane operations also required prior consultation and agreement with Southampton Airport, due to the close proximity of the airport and its flight paths.
The footprint of the building includes an additional leg to form an 'L' shape to suit the shape of the site. The building has rendered elevations, with a flat roof containing continuous lines of rooflights and PV panels. A canopy was constructed in feature steelwork between the new building and existing Block A to provide an attractive covered walkway between the buildings.
