The works comprised the design and construction of new primary school buildings to include major refurbishment of the existing Victorian school building to provide 3 class bases, admin areas, staff room, toilet facilities and Plant room. Phased construction of the new accommodation was necessary to enable the school to remain fully operational throughout the works.
New build works included a multi-use hall with kitchen and toilet areas, reception area with secure lobby, LRC Unit, Reception and pre-school class bases with associated toilet areas, upper junior teaching space with attached outdoor roof terrace teaching space.
In conjunction with the Client and Design Team we re-arranged phasing of the construction works to enable the school to remain fully operational whilst still delivering the scheme to original timescales. Substantial delays had occurred prior to our appointment, and this re-phasing mitigated the delay. The revised phasing arrangements enabled the school to take possession of Phase 1 to co-incide with the start of the new academic year.
I believe the Team produced an outstanding design which integrates exceptionally well with the retained buildings and makes great use of the site topography and at the same time retains the street frontage. The mix of traditional and vernacular materials has provided a pleasing interpretation of the old Victorian buildings. Although delayed due to extended periods of inclement weather, the scheme was delivered to budget and, although a challenging design, the scheme is of the highest quality. Working with Drew over the challenging procurement period was genuinely easy and pleasurable, with the result that a rewarding outcome was achieved. During construction Drew worked to ensure it responded with practical solutions to some challenging requirements. This applied particularly to the structural elements. Drew also adopted a 'can-do' attitude, especially to co-ordination issues, and always solutions. Drew was very approachable, courteous and acted professionally at all times, and I would certainly recommend them for future projects.David Morris, Sweett Group UK
